spring has sprung

earlier this week our family took a drive to the carlsbad flower fields. the gorgeous spring flowers are in 100% bloom. it was fun to spend a couple hours leisurely walking the grounds.
the carlsbad climate is perfect for growing the ranunculus flower, and the garden is still the only ranunculus grower in the world that allows visitors to walk the fields to experience the flowers up-close.sophie had a blast discovering the beauties. that's a baby in the lower right corner.
she was so curious about the blooms, it was hard to get her to look at the camera.

all said, i'm pretty sure she enjoyed herself.

the gardens are open until may 10, 2009. while you're at it, you can stop by the carlsbad outlet mall and make a day out of it. good stuff!

my favorite time of year

cherry blossoms, or sakura trees as they are called in japan are about to bloom. i LOVE these trees. my neighbor has two in her front yard and i often find myself gazing at them for long periods of time. not only are they absolutely stunning, i find their symbolism to be intriguing. in china, cherry blossoms symbolize feminine beauty, strength, and feminine principle. the japanese believe that because the blooming time is short, cherry blossoms represent the transience of life, a reminder that life is constantly changing. vibrant and full of energy one minute, stark and vulnerable the next.

i must admit, i sometimes feel like a cherry blossom tree.
